Concerned about the healthcare cuts

To the editor:

As the former Mayor of Columbiana, and Current County Treasurer, I know that access to affordable, high-quality healthcare is essential for the well-being of our residents. However, I am concerned that recent legislation brought up in Congress threatens healthcare in rural and underserved communities.

Specifically, I am concerned about cuts to the 340B program, which allows eligible hospitals to purchase and provide outpatient prescription drugs at discounted prices. In turn, the program lowers the cost of medication for patients and allows hospitals with limited resources to expand access to care.

Cutting 340B would have a direct impact on patients here in Ohio. In Representative Johnson's district there are nine 340B eligible hospitals and health centers that rely on the discounted rates of medication to financially sustain their operations, including here in Columbiana County.

While there is always room for improvement of government programs, any changes to the 340B program should prioritize the best interests of all patients and hospitals, regardless of their location or financial background.

I urge our policymakers to engage in discussions with healthcare providers, community leaders, and local residents to understand the full implications of cutting the 340B program. Once those discussions take place, I am confident Ohio's Representatives, like Rep. Johnson, will conclude that this program is essential for providing care to our communities.
